“Why am I not healed?”
It is not uncommon for us to hear this question after some healing ministry. After all, we believe that God wants to heal us.
But why am I not healed? Is it because I have lack of faith?
No – healing is a much more complex issue than just my faith or your faith.
We can see that faith helps in healing, such as the woman with the issue of blood in Luke 8.
We can see that grace is involved in healing, such as that of the man crippled since young in Acts 3. There was no faith in him to believe, yet he was healed.
We need healing for our body, soul and spirit.
We also need to recognise we are body, soul and spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23).
In other words, healing is not limited to just our bodily condition. We need healing for our body, soul and spirit.
A person who is going through cancer needs needs more than just healing over the pain that cancer causes to the body. He needs healing for his soul – to have the right mindset – and spirit, to still believe in God.
Sometimes, we over-emphasise physical healing at the expense of the soul and spirit. As a result, the physical healing may not last long.
Until Jesus comes back, ours is a fallen world. Until His return, there are many factors working against our healing. These are the devil’s schemes to rob us of the life and life more abundant in Jesus. Hence the need for us to focus on God more than physical healing.
We need to learn to use both the happy moments of life and the unhappy moments of our lives to seek Him.
Specifically, in our bodily suffering, we can ask God to help us to journey inwards to know Him.
We need both the faith to believe God for healing as well as His strength to live through, should there be no healing.
We need to learn to use both the happy moments of life and the unhappy moments of our lives to seek Him.
I have been suffering with a chronic condition called psoriasis for more than 30 years. It costs me thousands of dollars every year for treatment. This condition comes with other complications to my overall health.
By His grace, I have learnt through the years to choose to be happy and positive regardless of this condition. And I refuse to let this condition define me.
Instead, God has taught me to look out for more of Him, rather than fixate on His healing.
In the process, my soul and spirit are healed – from discouragement and disappointment – even though I still have psoriasis.
So, should we still make time to pray for healing? Of course! It’s better to pray and see just 10% of people healed, than to not pray and see no one healed.
But importantly, while we continue to seek healing, let’s learn to seek Him – more than just His healing.
