40D 2025 Day 14

Bible reading for 40.Day 2025 | John 8:12

We are living in an era of rapid technological advancement. Artificial Intelligence (AI), social media, and big data are shaping our daily lives.

While technology makes information more accessible, it also brings challenges: The spread of misinformation, blurred moral standards, and weakened human relationships.

In such a time, how can we hold on to our faith and not be consumed by darkness? The answer is clear: we must go All In to live in God’s light.

Jesus said He is the Light of the world (John 8:12), and those who follow Him will not walk in darkness. Let us look at three ways we can be the light that shines for God in this hi-tech era at every stage of life, even in times of suffering.

1. Know that Jesus is the true Light, and hold fast to the truth in a world of information overload

In this era of AI and big data, we are bombarded by countless pieces of information daily. Social media, reels, and the algorithm are constantly pushing content toward us, making it difficult to distinguish truth from falsehood. In the face of this flood of information, only Jesus is the true Light, and His truth is our most reliable guide.

John 1:5 says,

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

This world is full of false values: Wealth is seen as success, indulgence as happiness. But God’s light can show us the true purpose of life.

Let us seek God’s wisdom through prayer and Bible reading in a world of information overload, so that we will not get distracted by these false lights, but will focus on following Jesus wholeheartedly.

2. Shine for the Lord regardless of your age

God’s Light is not limited by age. The young, the middle-aged and the old are all called to shine for the Lord in their respective circles.

I would like to specifically encourage those of us who are 50 and above. Many of us have worked hard all our lives and are now looking forward to retirement. But Singaporeans generally live well into their 80s, and increasingly more people are living past 100 years old. The wisdom and life experiences of these seniors can be a great blessing.

The Bible reminds us in Psalm 92:14 that,

“They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green.”

Seniors can continue to do so through prayer, mentoring younger believers, and sharing the Gospel with their peers, testifying to God’s faithfulness in their lives.

We often see many seniors gathering during the day in different parts of Singapore, either to exercise together or to have coffee while chatting with each other about life. Churches can also make good use of the daytime, changing the way we do things to engage retirees, so that they can continue to shine and bring light to the world.

3. Be a light for the Lord, even in our suffering

In life, we all face hardships and challenges. Illnesses, financial struggles, family conflicts, and even persecution for our faith can make us feel weak at times.

Yet, God’s light shines even more brightly in these moments of darkness. Jesus assures us that His light will never go out because of circumstances. Rather, it shines even brighter in the face of darkness.

Jesus assures us that His light will never go out because of circumstances.

Last December, I had an accident. I was supporting the church youth camp and helping with the final night’s campfire. Suddenly, an explosion occurred, and my face was severely burned. I was rushed to the emergency room. By God’s grace, I experienced a rapid recovery. It was really quite amazing.

Through this, I learned a valuable lesson: When God allows something to happen, He will also provide a way through it. Everyone, even the youth in our church had their faith strengthened because of this event.

So when we face suffering, let’s not allow darkness to consume us. Instead, let’s allow God’s light to shine through our faith, patience, and hope, so that more people may come to know Christ through our testimony.

Matthew 5:14-16 says,

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

No matter how the world changes, Jesus Christ remains the Light of the world. Let us stand firm in our faith and hold fast to the truth. No matter which stage of life we are in, and even in times of suffering, let us proactively shine for the Lord. May we all declare, “Lord, I am willing to go All In and live in Your light!”

Let us pray:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Jesus Christ as the Light of the world, to shine into our lives so that we no longer live in darkness. Lord, in this age of rapid technological advancement, we are easily influenced by trends of the world and misled by false lights. We ask that You guard our hearts and help us to go All In to follow You and live in Your true light. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Reflect:

1. How much time are we giving to sources of information and how much time are we giving to prayer and the reading of God’s Word? What will we do today to let the Word of God sanctify us and lead us to the truth?

2. How is Jesus the Light shining through our life right now? When people look at us, do they see Jesus? If not, what will we do about it?

3. We overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony (Revelation 12:11). With whom can you share the truth and light of God with your story today?

Pray:

1. That we set our minds on things above, not things of the earth. That we will shift our affection to Jesus our Lord, the Light of the world.

2. That we commit to our calling as a royal priesthood and a chosen people, not living in darkness, but walking in God’s marvellous light (1 Peter 2:9)

3. That we will shine for the Lord in every circumstance, whether in victory or in difficulty. That our faith and long-suffering will win others to our Lord Jesus.
