CLASSICAL PIANO TO CONTEMPORARY KEYBOARD

Struggling to transition from classical playing to contemporary worship? This course is designed for classically-trained pianists looking to adapt their skills for contemporary worship. Learn how to use your classical foundation to play effectively, whether solo or with a band.

Course duration

3 weeks

This workshop is for

Classically-trained pianists who are finding it challenging to play in a contemporary style (whether solo or accompanied by a worship band) as the first keyboardist.
Note: This course will not touch on synthesiser use / second keyboard.

Prerequisites

Participants must:

  • Have some classical piano training and have a basic understanding of chords
  • Have been playing contemporary Christian music for at least 6 months
  • Prepare two contemporary Christian songs (post-2000) to play in class

Course highlights

  • Learn how to convert from classical to contemporary piano-playing
  • Find out how your classical training is relevant to contemporary playing
  • Hear from someone who can play both classical and contemporary genres

8 observer spaces available (observers can ask questions but no hands-on opportunities)

About the instructor

Joyce Poh holds a Masters in Music from the University of Sheffield and has been serving in the music ministry for almost 40 years. She has been involved in contemporary worship for more than 30 years in various capacities (pianist and worship band music director), and is a member of Pentecost Methodist Church.

Date: Class 1 – March 4, 11 and 18, 2026 
           Class 2 – August 12, 19 and 26, 2026

Time: 7.30pm-9pm

Venue: Methodist School of Music (Level 3)

Cost: Participant – S$245 (inclusive of GST)
           Observer – S$100 (inclusive of GST)

The Methodist School of Music is a member of the Methodist Schools network. MSM was founded in 1997 as an agency of the Methodist Church in Singapore and is registered with the Ministry of Education.
